Escom engineer dies in road accident


Malawi Police have confirmed the death of District Engineer for Nkhatabay Escom, Patrick Ngonya who died in a road accident in wee hours of Monday, September 11.

Confirming the incident, Nkhatabay Police Publicist Ignatius Esau said the accident happened after the deceased failed to negotiate a sharp corner at Malaza Trading Centre in the district.
He was driving a Toyota Hilux pick-up registration number BR 8147.
“Upon arrival at Malaza trading center, he failed to negotiate a corner thereby losing control of the said motor vehicle.
“The motor vehicle overturned once and due to the impact, the driver died on spot due to head injuries whereas the passenger escaped unhurt,” said Esau.
He also asserted that Ngonya is the fourth person to die in road traffic accident in the district this month alone.
Ngonya, 38, hailed from Mkombanyama village, Traditional Authority Mwaulambia in Chitipa district.
Meanwhile, two people have died while 11 others sustained serious injuries when the bus they traveling in overturned in Mtakataka, Dedza district.
The accident happened Monday afternoon following the bursting of the bus’ two rear tyres.
The bus consequently overturned, killing two people on spot with several others sustaining serious injuries.
At the weekend, 15 people were confirmed dead in two separate road accidents in Blantyre and Chiradzulu.
The first accident, which killed seven people including a driver, happened at a place called Six Miles along Robert Mugabe Highway in Chiradzulu.
Another accident involving an Isuzu lorry carrying 40 passengers happened at Namikasi Secondary School, which is along the M1 Road, leaving eight people dead.
