Um soldado americano acusado de matar 16 afegãos, entre eles nove crianças, se declarou culpado nesta quarta-feira, em um acordo para escapar da pena de morte, informou seu advogado.
O sargento Robert Bales será julgado em setembro por uma Corte Marcial pelo assassinato de 16 pessoas e seis tentativas de homicídio durante o massacre, ocorrido em março de 2012 no sul do Afeganistão. A maior parte das 22 pessoas baleadas foi atingida na cabeça.
O advogado do sargento, John Browne, citado pelo jornal The New York Times, afirma que os promotores militares aceitaram o acordo com seu cliente.
O sargento Bales, 39 anos, está detido na base Lewis-McChord, no estado de Washington.
No dia 11 de março de 2012, Bales abandonou sua base no distrito de Panjwayi, na província de Kandahar, para assassinar os afegãos e incinerar seus corpos.
