South Africans need not be worried of a spread of the Zika virus this according to minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi. Speaking to SABC News the minister confirmed that the virus has been detected in the country this after a case in which a Colombian man who has recently travelled to South Africa from his home country was detected to have been infected with the virus.
The businessman was in South Africa for four days when he complained of a fever. Zika virus is transmitted to humans through a mosquito that transmits other viruses like yellow fever, dengue and chikungunya.
Motsoaledi says the National Institute for Communicable Diseases is busy conducting confirmatory tests this after the man had fully recovered from the fever and rash that are characteristic of the virus. The minister allied fears that the virus might spread throughout the country saying, “We must not be worried because the Zika virus doesn’t move from one person to the other. In other words it is not transmitted from one human being to another human being, there has to be a mosquito vector in between.”
Motsoaledi was also quick to squash talks of this being the first Zika incident in the country saying that It would be wrong to say that this is the first case of the Zika virus in South Africa, this Because this is a case of a Colombian businessmen who got infected in his country and its only that he was diagnosed here in South Africa.
