Five things we know about the 'coup' in Burundi

1. The man who made an announcement broadcast on radio that the army was taking control of the country from President Pierre Nkurunziza is General Godefroid Niyombareh, a former ambassador to Kenya.

2. Niyombareh was fired as intelligence chief by Nkurunziza in February 2015.
3. Niyombare made his declaration to reporters at a military barracks in the capital Bujumbura.
4. He has apparently announced that a transitional government is being formed, and the army has been deployed to the state broadcaster.
5. Nkurunziza is out of the country attending an East Africa Community Summit in Tanzania, and his spokesman has dismissed reports of a coup as a "joke".
