Hundreds view Chakuamba’s body to pay last respects to Malawi veteran politician



The mood was sombre and wails engulfed at Comesa Hall in Blantyre on Wednesday when the body of veteran politician Gwanda Chakuamba was brought from the College of Medicine mortuary to allow the public pay their last respects.

Mourners who included family members, former president Bakili Muluzi, government officials, and political leader qued up at  Comesa Hall to pay their last respects.
Chakuamba is expected to be interred at his home Chinyanje Village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mlolo in Nsanje District on Friday with full State honours,  according to government.
One of the few remaining longest serving politicians, Chakuamba died aged 81 after a long battle with chronic diseases. He succumbed to heart complications on Tuesday while receiving treatment at Blantyre Adventist Hospital (BAH) where he was admitted on October 13.
Described by President Peter Mutharika as “a selfless Malawian nationalist” who was among the earliest to join, at a tender age, the struggle against colonial rule in Nyasaland and went on to serve the country in various high ranking public portfolios before being imprisoned for many years by the Malawi Congress Party,  Chakuamba be buried with full military honours.
Minister of Information and Communications Technology Malison Ndau government was according the fallen hero a State funeral in recognition of the enormous contribution he made to the nation.
A State funeral is a public funeral service that observes strict rules of protocol held to honour deserved citizens of national significance.
