Malawi’s prominent performing arts don Eric Mabedi was elected National Theatre Association of Malawi president during the association’s Annual General Meeting held in Liwonde, Machinga on Saturday.

Mabedi, who is the director of Malawi’s leading Kwathu drama group, assumed the office unopposed following the withdrawal of wannabe James Kitchen.
The election of Mabedi, known in the theatre world by his stage name Jacob with his committee has signified unity across the national as new officer bearers have come from all the three regions of the country, South, Central and North unlike in the past.
James Gondwe of the North was elected Vice chairman, Isaac Banda also from the North was elected General Secretary, James Kitchen from Central Region.
Member of Parliament Bon Kalindo, who is reputable comedian took up the Publicity post with MBC radio actress Beauty Fologonya was his deputy and Chancy Mauluka is the Treasurer.
Mabedi said the elections were free and fair and reflected on the national unity of the country.
“The elections were free and fair people had put in place candidates of their choice. I am particular impressed with the national representation,” Mabedi said.
He said he decided to run following a call from request.
“I have never considered that I would lead the association until I was convinced to do so in the interest of theatre,” Mabedi said.
“I take this as an honour and a challenge to all of us.”
He appealed to the members to embrace marketing strategies to enable them make the best of arts.
Deputy Director of Culture in the ministry of Civic Education and Culture James Thole appealed to the artistes to embrace and implement strategic plans as a blueprint for long term goals.
A cross section of actors and actresses including Frank Patani Mwase, Frank Yalu, Jeremiah Mphande, Evance Mbewe.
