The body of a man thought to be abducted pro-democracy activist Itai Dzamara has been found near a Central Intelligence Organisation torture facility in Goromonzi, sources said.
The body was found at Goromonzi turn-off, a few kilometres from the CIO base, on Tuesday morning, witnesses said.
Police immediately cordoned off the area and confiscated camera/phones of passers-by but did not immediately identify the body. The witnesses said the dead man wore black shorts, a white and red shirt similar to those worn by Dzamara when he was kidnapped by five unknown assailants in Harare Monday.
Dzamara was planning street protests to force dictator Robert Mugabe out of office when he disappeared. On Saturday, he addressed MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s star rally in Harare and urged Zimbabweans to take to the streets to protest the Zanu PF leader’s misrule.
MDC national executive member Job Sikhala warned the incident could spark a revolution.
“This could be the Sarajevo assassination that people have been waiting for. Revolutions have been sparked by the stupid behaviour of despots. And this might be one of them!” Sikhala said.
