Johannesburg - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has expressed shock at the latest incident of police brutality in the country.
eNCA.com exclusively revealed footage, which shows an off-duty policeman assaulting an unarmed woman, in full view of two uniformed policemen while at a fuel station.
The footage clearly shows Warrant Officer Ernest Maratshane, who is stationed at Smithfield SAPS, hitting the woman and later kicking her in the head, as she lays motionless on the ground. Maratshane is not in police uniform.
After Maratshane begins assaulting the woman, two uniformed policemen pull him away but do not restrain or arrest him. They move him away from the woman but Maratshane is still able to walk back to her and kick her when she falls to the ground. The two police officers do not offer any assistance to the woman.
When she spoke to eNCA.com, the victim said she did not press charges against Maratshane. She said she knew him personally.
Speaking to eNCA after viewing the video was published, IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini condemned the policeman's actions.
He said his department dispatched two senior investigators to obtain the footage and would open a docket for investigation, this morning.
Dlamini said investigators would approach the victim and attempt to obtain a statement from her, adding it would be difficult to proceed against the officer if she was not willing to give a statement.
The footage is the latest in a string of incidents of police brutality to come to light in recent months - the most shocking of which involved the death of Mozambiquan Mido Macia, who was tied to a police van and dragged down a road.
